Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers work in many different areas of the Hospital. Every attempt is made to match a volunteer’s interests, skills, and availability with hospital needs. The following is a sample of some of our volunteer opportunities: 

Aetna Foundation Children’s Center   provide child care to children while parents are attending support/education meetings, as well as providing clerical support to the staff 
Admitting   escort new patients to their rooms or other departments and assist department personnel with clerical/registration duties 
Access Centers  many opportunities exist at our Access Centers in Glastonbury and Avon - greet visitors and patients, provide directions and assist staff with other assignments 
Cancer Center  visit patients and provide assistance at lunch time, as well as providing support to the staff 
Central Service  assist staff with a variety of duties, which include folding, labeling and stocking shelves and making deliveries 
Clerical   assist staff in many departments with filing, answering phones, data entry, faxing, copying, sending reports and other tasks as needed 
Discharge/Escort Services  transport and discharge patients by wheelchair and help visitors find their way 
Emergency Department  provide assistance in a very busy area of the hospital by transporting patients, running errands for staff and providing non-medical services to the patients 
Fitness Center  assist staff by answering phones, make appointments and other tasks as needed 
Gift Shops   provide personalized services to customers in the Gift Shops operated by the Women’s Auxiliary 
Guest Relations  assist visitors at the Information Desks by providing patient information and directions 
Hospital Information Systems  assist with data entry and other computer related tasks 
Hospice  provide support and companionship to patients and families in their homes 
Laboratory Services  assist with filing, preparation and mailing of surgical slides and reports 
Lifeline  help demonstrate, install and maintain the personal emergency response systems that allow elderly and handicapped people to remain in their homes, but with the knowledge that immediate help will be available if needed 
Music Is Healing  play musical instruments for patients on the oncology unit 
Patient Representatives  talk to patients and proactively anticipate and respond to non-medical needs of patients in the Emergency Department and on in-patient units 
Nursing Units   assist the nursing staff with a variety of patient related tasks such as transporting patients, running errands, helping at meal time, filling water pitchers, delivering mail, making beds, etc. 
Outpatient Clinics  assist staff with registration of patients, clerical duties, greeting and assisting patients 
Rx for Reading  foster an interest in reading by reading to young children in the Pediatric Clinic, emphasizing the importance of reading by being a role model for the parents 
Storeroom  assist with storage and delivery of supplies and materials throughout the hospital 
Surgical Waiting Room  provide support and reassurance to families of surgical patients by keeping them informed. 
Thrift Shop   sell merchandise to the general public in Repetitions, the thrift shop operated by the Women’s Auxiliary
